Is buying a policy at the last-minute even allowed?
Well, can you purchase travel insurance last-minute? Yes, you can. But be aware that travel insurance is only meant for unplanned events. If you buy it last-minute because you know you are feeling ill or a big storm is approaching, that is known as a little thing called “insurance fraud” – so we’d advise you to stay away from that. However, if you are legitimately going on your trip, then yes you can buy it at the last minute if you know the correct policies to purchase that allow it.
What are the coverages you lose out on if you buy at the last moment?
Some types of insurance are not available if you buy at the last moment. If you’re interested in the following travel insurance, it is best to plan ahead.
Insurance “Cancel for Any Reason”
Cancel for any reason (CFAR) allows travelers to cancel their plans at any time and receive a partial refund of nonrefundable expenses. This plan must be purchased within two to three weeks of your initial trip deposit date (depending on the policy). Cancel for any reason policies are extremely popular due to the powerful protection they offer.
Pre-existing medical conditions
It is important to be protected if you have pre-existing medical condition which could cause a trip to be disrupted. You will have insurance in case a medical issue arises before or during your trip.
Most insurance companies offer coverage for preexisting conditions. However, most of them require that you qualify for a waiver for preexisting medical conditions. These waivers require that you purchase your policy within a certain time period following your booking. This is usually within two or three weeks, depending on the policy.
If you did not qualify for a pre-existing medical condition waiver, you may not be covered if your medical condition requires treatment while you are traveling.
Trip cancellation
Trip cancelation coverage is most valuable when purchased soon after booking. You may not be covered for trip cancellation if you wait to buy travel insurance until the last moment.
You may also not be able use trip cancellation insurance in other situations if you delay purchasing it. Be aware, once a hurricane is named, it’s impossible to buy travel insurance to cover any loss you might incur if you have to alter your travel plans. If you break your leg before you leave, you cannot buy travel insurance to cover cancellation of your trip.
